Making it to Maker Faire Singapore 2017

It’s already two months after Maker Faire, and we’re finally ready to talk about it! Perhaps it took us this long to recover from the madness.

Maker Faire Singapore’s 6th iteration was held at the Singapore Science Centre, and we decided to one-up the 3 escape rooms we made for 2016, and build a cardboard arcade (inspired by Caine Monroy—yes, 5 years late, but inspiration never grows old!).

“I thought we said last year never to do this again”

In 2 months, we churned out 6 different games, a life-size dismantle-able Tardis, an arcade credit system, and chugged through too much cardboard and coffee to count. Weekends and weeknights were burned and ever so often you’d hear someone lament ‘I thought we said last year never to do this again’.

However, making for Maker Faire (or any event for that matter) has a mysterious pull—you come up with a crazy idea, start working on the crazy idea, sign yourself up for a showcase deadline, and realise that your crazy idea will never be done in time for the deadline… but you’re an arm and a leg deep in it already and hey, sunk cost! So you keep sinking more in.

But when it’s all over, you rise to the surface again, or get washed up to shore, (whatever floats your analogous boat ;)), and realise that you’re still alive. Rosy retrospection kicks in, and you finally are able to talk about your experience. Maybe it takes a month, but here we are, and here’s what we did for Maker Faire SG 2017: Tinkerbot’s Arcade of Many Bits.

(We tried calling it Tinkerbot's Arcade of Many Bits Over Up Rolling In Nice Exciting Stuff, for TAMBOURINES, but that… was a bit much.)

Infrared remotes, lasers and a whole bunch of micro:bits, PVC pipes, cans, black cardboard, free stock-photo prints, and artfully flicked paint make one of the most polished looking games in our arcade.

Because we are finally established enough to have an archive of past projects, we revived what was once titled flipgame01, gameoflife, and lifearcade in different lives, tweaked it to different levels of difficulty, and added a time-out in 5 minutes to get a new entry for the arcade.

No arcade is complete without a rhythm game but arrows and rectangular screens are so last decade. So with the total experience of one video on YouTube, I decide to make a circular Maimai look-alike. But of course, tribute where tribute is due — DDR, the original arcade crowd puller, lives on in this cardboard soundtrack.

This micro:bit powered re-invention of the runaway hit phone game gave our intern Wei Heng so much trouble and maybe some grey hairs. But internet celebrity is priceless.

Somehow, this LeMans-inspired game manages to make use of both Arduino and micro:bit, off-the-shelf parts, and cobbled-together scraps, and was not just a see-how-long-you-survive on the track, but also definitely an endurance test in engineering for our NUS School of Computing interns Alex and Derrick.

So many people worked on this — the interns had been playing and introducing KTANE to the office, and getting it to be real life was so exciting that they wanted to craft every single puzzle module the video game had. I think they achieved a fair number (9 working).

The TARDIS was so impressive, we literally got marriage proposals in exchange for it. Luckily, one of the Tardis craftsmen is still available. DM us for more info.

Every arcade has that auntie that sits behind the counter changing your cash for shiny tokens, or topping up the credit in your Timezone card. We couldn’t let you miss out on that essential experience, and of course we had to make it even cooler.

You may have noticed that many of the games were headed by an intern or two, many from our local computing schools, and some waiting to enter university. It was great to see them struggle through known and unknown unknowns, because we saw how they didn’t quit. Even when things broke down during transportation, and they had to spend half of Maker Faire Day 1 under public pressure to fix games, they persisted. Even when electrical bits burned up at 4am on Friday, they still made it on time to Maker Faire 4 hours later. We couldn’t be prouder of what they’ve achieved.
